Explore this park with several trails and enjoy a green sanctuary away from the city, just a few minutes from downtown Puerto Varas. Philippi Park, built in honor of German naturalist and explorer Bernardo Philippi, is the perfect place for quiet contemplation, fun activities and lovely walks. It was donated by the Lions Club. Climb to the top for wonderful views over the city, as well as the chance to see the beautiful illuminated Monumental Cross which is visible from so much of Puerto Varas.
Serene trails in Philippi Park
Located in the northern part of Puerto Varas, is named after one of the most important people in southern Chile's history. Bernardo Philippi, was the colonizing agent for Germany in Chile and was responsible for recruiting immigrants from Europe. Enjoy this "green lung" of Puerto Varas, which has the advantage of being accessible from the main city center and being not so large that families can't easily get around it. There are a number of easy trails taking in a leafy and green area of nature, with uphill walks taking you to the glorious summit.
Children will have great fun on the winding maze of passages that lead the way, and you'll enjoy the peace and varying vegetation the area offers. Birders will enjoy spotting the various species that make their home here. Ascend to the viewpoint, which is 30m high, and you'll be rewarded by fantastic views over the entire city, Lake Llanquihue and the Calbuco, Osorno and Puntiagudo volcanoes. At this high point is the Monumental Cross, which is illuminated at night, and is a popular attraction in the city. Get your selfies and group photos with this local icon before you descend the hill.
The park is also a hotbed for sporting and leisure activities. For those that enjoy quickening their pulse, the sometimes steep trails themselves can be used for sports such as mountain biking and running. Alternatively, get a thrill by flying through the forest on a zip wire installed in the park. Offered by the adventure sports company Canopy Pro, it consists of seven panoramic platforms and 800 meters of cable, allowing young and old the chance to enjoyable and safe journeys through the forest canopy. You can get to this small and quiet park easily from the center of the city; it lies close to the Cultural Center. It's the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of urban life for a few hours and enjoy walks and picnics with the family.
