Sloan Park

Watching a baseball game in the US is one of those American experiences you must live once. You've seen it in movies, you know about the fanatics, so why not see it firsthand?

If you are visiting Mesa, Arizona, Sloan Park is the place to make this happen.

The ballpark

The Sloan Park opened in 2014. It is home to teams like the Chicago Cubs – the ballpark is their spring training house – the Arizona League Club and the Mesa Solar Sox.

The park was built by residents of the city of Mesa and, the design was commissioned by Populous – a global architectural firm which specializes in designing sports venues.

The dimensions of the stadium were made close to the ones of the home stadium of the Chicago Cubs in Chicago, the Wrigley Field.

Formerly the park was known as Cubs park but changed its name in 2015 to Sloan Park.

Spring training

American coach and baseball player, Rogers Hornsby once said: "People ask me what I do in the winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring."

Exactly, because when visiting Mesa during the spring, you will be able to attend the training sessions of the fantastic Chicago Cubs.

The spring training consists of a series of practices and exhibitions that start before the official baseball season. It is the perfect time of the year to go to Arizona's warm climate to see how players try out new positions and practice for the real competition.

It is usually held at the same time of spring break, so there is a lot of people attending, ensuring your fun during the game and after.

Five things you must do at a baseball game

To live the full experience here's a list of things you have to do when you go to the game.

Doors open two hours before the game starts, so head there early to make sure you can purchase one of the famous finger foams to cheer for your team. Eat ice-cream in a baseball cup and chew on some Cracker Jacks – this caramel popcorn is a traditional snack that has existed as long as the games have.

Stand and sing to the Take me out to the ball game song during the 7th inning stretch – you can't miss out on this epic moment. Lastly, eat a hotdog!

Games usually last for hours and hours, so you have plenty of time to enjoy all of this throughout the day.

Good to know

If you are lucky you might be able to keep one of the balls as a souvenir. According to the rules, fans can keep either foul balls and home run balls that hit in seating areas. However, if you catch one from the opponent team, you must toss it back into the field. Make sure you know which side you are cheering for because you don't want to be that person!

Watch out for the kissing camera, you might have to kiss the person next to you; and let's hope it's your partner!

Fun facts about the Cubs

In the 1800s the team was formerly called The Chicago White Stockings.

In the early 1900s, they used to have a three-fingered pitcher.

Eddie Vedder from Pearl Jam wrote a song to the Cubs, titled All the way.
